kolum was founded by Helge and Marius in 2024. Helge, a doctoral candidate at the University of Münster who had been researching the legal implications of the EU CBAM since 2021, began offering webinars for affected companies. After exchanging ideas with hundreds of importers and learning about their problems firsthand, he turned to his friend Marius. Together they built a first software product to tackle the most immediate CBAM challenges.
But what companies kept telling them went far beyond CBAM. Importers were facing a growing wall of EU regulation, from EUDR to F-Gas, changing tariff rates, export control, customs declaration and tariff classification, each with its own deadlines, formats and penalties, and almost no tooling to keep up. So kolum grew into something bigger: an AI-first platform for holistic trade compliance that brings all customs-related processes together in one place. Today they work with a small, fantastic team to make trade compliance simple and manageable for organisations of all sizes, and they are building toward a future where compliance runs quietly in the background so their customers can get back to business.
